1) I have gallstones. That’s what’s been ailing me over the past three months, and it’s been so long that it’s really, really fucking bad now. Every day is spent in alternating waves of pain and nausea, I can’t eat anything at all… Fun.

2) I am, however, on painkillers and anti-nausea medication and, once I get the financial aid junk out of the way, I will finally be able to schedule my surgery for, hopefully, next week. So, the light at the end of the tunnel is visible — assuming it’s not actually a car’s headlights.

3) I apologize if I’ve been neglecting anyone. That’s why, though. Using my computer usually ends up making me feel nauseated, and I don’t have the patience for pouring over Tumblr anyway. Twitter’s all I can manage, anymore. So, if any of you posted sexy pictures of yourselves during the past week or two, please e-mail them to me, as I probably missed them. Thanks.

4) SHAMELESS BUSINESS: I feel like shit doing this to you all, but I (and my far-too-kind parents) are barely able to get through this financially, so if you’re planning on buying stuff through Amazon, could you please do it via this link here? So, there you go. That’s my life, of late. I am, however, 50 pounds lighter now, so that’s one of the few pluses to come from this. But please send your prayers and mana potions this way, in hopes I’ll be able to enjoy this Christmas like a normal person. Thanks. Love you.

i don’t really care about everyone else, and especially not Bono. Ugh.

I’m sorry, but the only people on this cover who are actually worth caring about are Bono (and the rest of U2) and Paul McCartney (as well as, possibly, Dave Grohl). You hip and trendy little kids can trash Bono and U2 all you want, but they’ve done more for rock ‘n’ roll, and probably for humanitarian causes, than any band you’re currently listening to.

Is Bono a little heavy-handed sometimes? Is U2 nowhere near as good as they used to be? Yeah, sure. Does that matter? Not really. I mean, seriously? Amy Crackho, Noel Tremendoustwat, and Lily Selfcenteredcunt don’t deserve to breathe the same air as them. (And who’s that on the right? Is that Muse? I can’t tell.)

OH MY GOODNESS.

I completely forgot that today (the 24th) is Mystery Science Theater 3000’s 21st birthday. 21 years ago, the show premiered on local Minnesota television. It certainly came a long way from those humble and mildly embarrassing roots, and I’ll be danged if it’s not still going strong, healthy as ever, under the Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic umbrellas.

I had the blessing of being able to see the Cinematic Titanic crew (i.e. Joel, Trace, Frank, Josh, and Mary Jo) perform live in Philadelphia. They haven’t lost The Funny at all, and they (along with their Cinematic Titanic cohort Dave “Gruber” Allen, AKA Mr. Rosso on Freaks and Geeks) are absolutely some of the nicest people in the business of The Funny. Joel Hodgson held a 30-second conversation with me. With me, some fat shlub in a Speed Racer t-shirt. He and Josh even thanked me for doing this. See? Class acts.

Admittedly, the show isn’t for everyone, but then Joel (and, for the most part, MST3K itself) have always held firm to the belief that, “The right people will get it.” If you don’t get it, fair enough. But MST3K and the amazing people behind it have brought so much levity and brightness into my gloomy little existence. For that, I will always love them.

The first episode of the Maria Bamford Show

I can’t tell how much of the crazy is real and how much is just manic spillover, but she’s one of the best comedians going right now either way.

I’ve been slow to discover Maria Bamford. It’s so hard to find truly funny female comedians (sorry if that offends anyone, but it’s fucking true for me) so I haven’t been especially eager to sample her wares. But after watching this, I will be much less slow. Manic squirrel. I like.

Sidenote: It kind of unnerves me how much Midwest accents turn me on. Hurm.

Pixies, “Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf)”

I’ve got to be honest with you: I think “Debaser” and “Wave of Mutilation” are two of the weakest tracks on Doolittle. But the “UK Surf” revision of the latter really redeems it for me. Somehow, the lyrics don’t seem so strange and grisly when sung in a dreamy, lounging-on-a-California-beach-at-sunset voice, despite the fact that this stripped-down form enhances their presence considerably.

In short, the Pixies are good at music, derp-a-derp.

Weezer - “Across the Sea”

Pinkerton may not be a perfect record, but it’s a pretty perfect Weezer record. And, for my money, “Across the Sea” is still a high-water mark on all fronts.

It encapsulates Rivers’ sweet/creepy/obsessive/self-pitying vibe in one exquisitely catchy little Japanese box. Which box probably contains a pair of used and extremely well-sniffed ladies’ underpants. But, whatever. Artists.

Still. I fucking love this song to death.

This performance is from 2005. As such, I’m surprised that they so accurately recaptured the original recording’s beauty, more or less. Despite a slightly more detached delivery from Rivers, it’s still an engaging reminder of all that Weezer is no longer capable of producing. It’s such a musically and lyrically beautiful and clever song, from a dirty, messy, gorgeous album.

It’s a far cry from the band’s current bubblegum mall-rock.
