meagan-marie:

I am sad. I am NOT okay with this. She looks like a stripper :(

(Nothing to do with the actress, BTW, just the costume. Latex was a very bad choice)

Part of me is okay with this, and part of me is not.

The part of me that is okay with this, is the part that realizes how much worse this costume could’ve been. I mean, this is a TV adaptation of a comic book. Think about it. If Smallville has taught us anything, it’s that the margin for error in these projects can be huge. For the most part, on the most basic level, this is a fairly straightforward Wonder Woman costume. Could be worse.

On the other hand, however, this looks a lot like one of those godawful, store-bought “sexy” Halloween costumes. Meagan’s right about the poor choice in materials, but even that wouldn’t hurt so bad, if only they hadn’t gone with such gaudy colors. I guess that David E. Kelley is maybe trying to make the series “lighter” and less intense than most superhero adaptations, but… no. This, this is left wanting in the dignity department.

And the lipstick? Okay, I get that Kelley is fucking with the character a bit, giving her a new interpretation, etc. But would an Amazonian warrior (assuming that part of her backstory is still intact) really take the time to apply lipstick before kicking ass?

Ugh. Look, I certainly hope that the series turns out well and not at all like the Bionic Woman remake, both for the sake of the character (whom I love) and for the future of superhero adaptations. Really. But given how much of a shit-show Kelley’s script seems to be, I expect to be praying for its quick, painless death.

Apparently, superhero costumes turn me into a gay man. I’m okay with that.

So, Tom Hardy is Bane.

Man oh man, do I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, I think Tom Hardy is pretty great, Star Trek: Nemesis notwithstanding. On the other hand, Bane is Hispanic, and Tom Hardy is not. There isn’t exactly a vast wealth of non-white heroes and villains in the comic book world, so it kind of feels, uh, not good to see Bane get whitewashed.

Also, I’m a big stickler for accuracy in comic book movies, regardless of the character’s race. I was annoyed by the idea of Donald Glover portraying Peter Parker, and I’m annoyed by this. Hey, I trust Chris Nolan, and he’s indicated that he’s going with a different interpretation of the character, but… Eh. This just feels icky.

But hey, go right ahead and slather on the Anne Hathaway, Chris. Go riiight ahead.

I’ve always felt there was a disturbing current of racism and homophobia that lies just under the surface of fandom, but it’s hard to sometimes tell whether it’s racial politics or semi-aspergian resistance to change the fuels hatred of casting choices like Michael Clark Duncan as Kingpin in Daredevil. Still, it’s disturbing to see a race hate group standing shoulder to shoulder with rank and file nerds when it comes to casting like this.

How Nerds Are Like Racists (via nerdsruineverything)

Can we talk about this? Like, can we really talk about this? Because I’m one of those “semi-aspergian” individuals. When a white comic book character is cast with a black actor, it ruffles my feathers a bit. Likewise, if Hollywood were to try to cast, say, Luke Cage as a white man, I’d be equally upset. Though the issue is race in part, the real concern is accuracy.

I don’t blame anyone for cringing when a fan (I refuse to use the word “nerd” here, thanks to the above blog’s clearly arrogant and antagonistic usage of the term) complains about, say, the suggestion that Donald Glover portray Peter Parker. But I don’t believe that it usually deals with race alone, so much as accuracy.

Accuracy is important to us geeks. When I go to see Iron Man on the big screen, I expect Tony Stark to look reasonably like Tony Stark and James Rhodes to look reasonably like James Rhodes. If Marvel wants to create alternate versions of characters like Nick Fury who are of different races and then put those versions on film, that’s fine. I’m totally cool with that. But we want accuracy from Hollywood, perhaps because we so seldom get it from them.

So, yes. Race is part of the issue. But it’s not at the core of the issue. We’re not necessarily racists — we’re just kind of OCD about people fiddling with the things we love.

comicscorner:

So today I discussed Power Girl’s boobs with Amanda Conner. It was a glorious conversation. She told me about how all her friends gave her crap about not drawing her boobs smaller. She told them the same thing I tell people when they ask me how I feel about the situation: “But, her boobs are big.”

We then discussed which heroine had which cup size. So, here’s Super Heroine Boob Size 101 according to Amanda Conner:

  • Supergirl: A to Low B Cup
  • Black Canary: High B to C Cup
  • Wonder Woman: Mid to High C Cup
  • Power Girl: DD Cup.

I just kind of want to hug Amanda Connor. I appreciate the lighter tone she brings to her comics. It’s as thought she respects the characters and the stories, and she has a balanced, mature perspective on them, but she never takes things too seriously. Good anecdote. Thanks for sharing that, comicscorner.

I saw a Power Girl action figure at the supermarket today. I got so excited.

Then, I saw the $16.99 price tag.

Dudes, do any of you remember toy prices from 10-15 years ago? Back then, a “premium” action figure like that would’ve been ten or twelve bucks, tops. Am I officially entering “old man” territory, now that I’m complaining about the prices of things? I just miss being a kid, man. I know; who doesn’t, right? But my God, the little things can be so depressing, sometimes.
